yKAN Announcement

Dec 16, 2009

Hello yKANers!

We have two great events coming up this week aimed at having a positive impact in the community. On Thursday, December 17, we will be meeting and having dinner with a representative of the upcoming 2010 United States Census and on Saturday, December 19, we will be helping out with the APEX Christmas party.

yKAN December Community Service Event

On Saturday, December 19, yKAN will be having our December Community Service Event. This month, we will be collaborating with APEX – Asian Professional Exchange – in preparing a Christmas party for inner city Asian youths. yKAN will be in charge of decorating the location so that the children can have a great time.

yKAN decided to work with APEX because APEX has been providing great mentoring and education programs to underprivileged Asian youths. However, due to current economic downturn, it was difficult for APEX to raise additional funds. Therefore yKAN has contributed $150 to help sponsor the event.

In addition to coming out and helping us decorate, you can help by either donating a gift to the APEX students or donating leftover Christmas decoration for the holiday party. If you would like to contribute, please email Byul Cho at byul@ykan.org.

WHEN:

SATURDAY, December 19, 2009, 10:00AM – 12:00PM

WHERE:

1 Henry Street

New York, NY

RSVP:

Please RSVP to byul@ykan.org by 12/17/09

After the event, members of yKAN will go out and have dim sum for lunch. This is optional but yKANers are encouraged to attend to mingle.

Through one-on one mentoring relationships, educational programs, and social services APEX helps youth overcome the multiple challenges they face, enabling them to cultivate valuable and meaningful relationships. Together, we hope to inspire our youth to create and achieve their goals. " www.apex-ny.org

Meetup/dinner with US Census Representative

This week yKAN will be partnering with a member of the US Census Bureau to help improve representation of the Korean American community in the upcoming 2010 United States Census.

The census is a very important tool for policy, planning, and budget allocating proposes for our state and federal governments. It helps forecast demand for schools and hospitals and map out our representation to the state and federal government.

Because of this, it’s important that our community is accurately counted and represented in the decennial census. Please join Ryan Kim, a Partnership Specialist at the US Census Bureau, with members of yKAN and various Korean student groups from local universities for a meeting on how we can improve our representation.

Dinner will be served and is free of charge.

THURSDAY, December 17, 2009, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
